myFUNcamera beachy stuff for your cards, books, scrapbooks Feb 26th | filed in: Shop talk, Photography tips, Random Mutterings

During WPPI last week, I had many requests for the sand and shells I used in my hard cover books that Mpix had on display.
CLICK HERE to see more about the Mpix hard cover books.

I created these images by collecting shells from right here in San Diego
and taking high-quality (super sharp) pictures of them.
In other words, these aren't stock images that I found or bought online somewhere.

The sandy backgrounds are jpgs, and the shells are png files with transparent backgrounds,
so it's really easy to drag them into the Mpix book software or into Photoshop.
BUT, you don't HAVE to have Photoshop to use them!

There are 5 shells (including a starfish), a sany background, and a background
with lots of jumbled little shells from Imperial Beach.

I've included lots of background sizes for different sized books, cards, and layouts,
so you don't have to worry about resizing or cropping to create the size you need.

The files are big, so you can make any size book or card or scrapbook page,
and you won't have to worry about quality loss when you GO BIG!

Here's a 100% view of some details.

GO HERE to purchase at myFUNcamera.com.

Once your payment is complete, you will get a link to download your purchase.

Jason Mraz makes me smile, and he could win you a $10 iTunes card! Happy Friday! Nov 14th | filed in: Fun and Games

Our whole family loves listening to music.
The kids have their taste, Jason has his, and I have mine.
Like a boolean chart, there are overlapping sections,
but we all have our own individual favorites.

One of my favorites is Mr. A to Z -- Jason Mraz. (you may know him as "The Geek in the Pink")
This guy's music is San Diego toe-tappin, head-bobbin', eyes-closed-grinnin' good times.
(The fact that he kissed me on the cheek doesn't hurt, either!)

But his latest song had me frustrated. This song, "I'm Yours" is FABULOUS!
The minute I heard it, I wanted to write a big fat blog post talking about how much
I adore this guy's music, but dag nab it, there was a word in there that was just
bugging the living daylights out of me!

It's not a bad word -- nothing parental controls would need to zap away -- but it just
went against a lot of what I treasure in my life, and it made me wonder,
"Why the heck did he use that word? Did it just fit the rhythm of the song better?
Is there some meaning I'm not getting?"

If I ever have the chance to just chill at the beach with him, I want to ask him
all about it (after or before our little harmonious jam session, either way).

Rewind the timeline to last month when I was in New York City.
I had the TV on in my hotel room, and there was Ellen,
telling me Jason Mraz was coming up next to sing his new song.
Of course, I sat back and watched, toe tapping, head bopping, eyes-closed grinning.
THEN, he got to that word that bugs me... AND, HE CHANGED IT!!!
I was SO HAPPY!!! The new word he used is SO SO SO SO SO much better!
I was BIG-TIME-GRINNING then!

Here's where you can win a $10 iTunes card. Shoot, you deserve by just getting to
the end of this babble, but I'm still gonna make you work for it!

Tell me what word he changed!
Here's the Ellen clip:

The first person to post a comment on the blog saying which word he changed
when he sang "I'm Yours" on Ellen will win a free $10 iTunes gift card!
(be sure to include the email address you use for iTunes!)

And Mraz, if you're reading this and want to elaborate, feel free!

Good luck!
***UPDATE!*** Chris has won! Congratulations!!!!

I'm still trying to recover from Vegas, and I'm all a-Twitter now, too! Feb 23rd | filed in: News

Getting past "you had to be there" syndrome is my #1 goal for this blog post!

WPPI was a blast, and if you're a photographer who wasn't there,
make plans for next year, because you missed out on a ton of fun and learning!

I landed in Vegas Sunday morning and met LISA at the airport.
We shared a cab to MGM, where we picked up BECCA for our brunch and Jill-e photoshoot.

Brunch at Bellagio was yummee as always, full of friendship and chit-chat,
but it was just a hint of the fun that was to be had over the course of WPPI.

After brunch, we went outside and started working on the Jill-e cover shoot.

Here are the beautiful Dana & Lisa in front of Bellagio:

Aren't they adorable?

Here are Lisa, Dana, and JILLIAN getting some silly shots that morning:

Sunday also ushered in the era of "The Hair."
No matter where I went, someone would comment on my hair.
It started in the airport with Lisa, and it didn't stop till I went to bed in San Diego
after getting home on Wednesday night (I'm not kidding).

I guess my hair must look like poopoo most of the time,
because for Vegas, I used my favorite ceramic flatiron to create some curl,
and I never stopped hearing about my hair.
My hair got more greetings than I did.

I had a choice to make:
#1: I could be flustered all week long because my hair was getting all of these comments.
#2: I could go back to my "I don't care" air-dried hair-do.
or
#3: I could embrace it, have fun with it, and take this as an opportunity to be a goofball.

I'm really good at being a total dork goofball, so I went with #3.
Brian (Mr. MeRa) said that my hair would have more friends than I ever could. He's probably right.
During this whole time, I was also debating getting started on Twitter (I've been holding out).
That's when I decided on my Twitter name: CareysHair
So, yes, I'm on Twitter now! I'm still figuring out the whole Twitter thing, but
feel free to follow CareysHair!

I used one of those "totally being a doofus" pictures on my Twitter page,
courtesy of Lisa:

Here's one more shot from Sunday with me, Dana, JILL, and Lisa:

See that cool camera strap of mine!?
I got my BLACK RAPID strap! This shoot was the first big test of that strap,
and I LOVE IT! I was afraid it would be too manly, but it's not!
I've used it at the beach for some sessions since then, too, and it's fabulous --
so much more comfortable than having a strap around my neck of my wrist!

After the Jill-e shoot, my camera went into the safe in my hotel room
and didn't come out until I left for the airport.
So, I don't have many pictures from the rest of the week,
but it sure was fun!

I was in the MPIX booth talking to folks every day,
and I got to meet up with some great friends, like JOE & JP and ladies from
last year's "Refuse to Say Cheese" workshop here in San Diego!

The tradeshows (there were TWO HUGE tradeshow rooms!) were amazing,
and full of great info, teaching, and new stuff for photographers!

I was also up late every night hanging out with friends and playing craps.
The MOST FUN was totally free, and I still laugh just thinking about it:
A group of us, including the mild-mannered mellow Shawn Reeder,
stayed up till the wee hours in the MGM food court putting on our own
Cheesy-80s-love-songs and showtunes Karaoke. It was HILARIOUS!
We rocked the house down with Air Supply, Journey, & Wicked songs!

Next year is bound to be a ton of fun & learning, plus I know there will be
some GREAT Platform Talks (wink wink), so set aside March 4-11, 2010 NOW!

Off to Vegas... Here's a little "back to basics" camera lesson for you Feb 14th | filed in: Photography tips

It's Saturday afternoon, and I just finished my "mom's leaving" tradition.
Every time I leave town for a photo convention,
I get a card for everyone for every day.
(Thank goodness for those $1 cards at Papyrus and Target!)

Mat, Rory, and Jason each get a card each morning that I'm gone.
Today I had to write out 12 cards.
The kids think I do this just because I'm an awesome mom.
Fellow wives: In addition to trying to be an awesome mom,
do you know why I REALLY do this?? I bet you do!

Anyway, I saw all of the cards lined up on the counter,
and I thought it would be cool to use them for some little lessons on camera settings.

The full lesson is at myFUNcamera.com, so check it out if you're interested!

Check out these images where I changed the f/# on the camera:

You can see how the pictures get darker as that f/# gets higher, but you also get more into focus.

If you wanted the picture brighter with more in focus, you could raise the ISO or lower your shutter speed.

Enjoy this little "back to basics" lesson,
and have fun experimenting with your own camera and lenses!
See the entire lesson HERE.

Next up: ISO! Stay tuned!
