La Jolla families Apr 15th | filed in: News

Fuzzy slippers are on my feet below my big baggy sweats
as I sit here listening to some COLD wind blow through my back yard.

Luckily, I have some warm and sunny beach images
to remind me that cold weather never sticks around for very long in San Diego.

Last week's weather in La Jolla took my breath away with its big puffy clouds,
blue sky, and and beautifully clean beach.

La Jolla is always pretty, but this day ranks up there as one of the prettiest I've seen.

Having such beautiful families there was a dream come true (corny, but I'm serious!).

Here are three siblings having fun in the sand:

These are the toes of the cutie who gave me my awesome Easter Card last week:

Another family was a part of this perfect day, too,
with kids who loved the water.

The little sister was a bit more timid than her brother,
so she always seemed to stay near an adult when she'd test her bravery against the crashing waves:

On that last one, I intentionally tilted my camera to add some drama.
When I teach workshops, I talk about how if you're going to tilt your camera,
make sure it's done so that it doesn't look like a screw-up.
I try to keep the horizons in most of my images straight, so when I go for camera tilt,
I don't mess around with subtlety!

Near the end of the session, once I knew we had all the pictures the mom & dad would want,
big brother was getting pretty brave as the waves crashed around him up to his waist.
I asked, "Do you want to take your shirt off so you have SOMETHING dry to go home in?"
A quick glance to mom confimed that my idea was a good one,
and she helped him take off his shirt.

I think his remaining timidity was removed along with his white polo,
because he darted into the water with never-before-seen courage.

Years of creating family pitures in La Jolla has taught me to be very aware of waves, sets, and shorebreaks.
I told the mom, "The next set is about to come in, and it's going to bury him -- head to toe! Is that ok?"

She laughed and waited for the waves along with me...

Let's just say....

I know my La Jolla waves!

The very next wave to come was this one:

I didn't stop shooting...
here are the next two frames (proving my "head to toe" prediction)

We all laughed SO HARD, and I think he was laughing the hardest!

Exhilerated is an understatment for the look on his face as he climbed out of the ocean soaking wet & smiling ear-to-ear,
but I can't think of a better word right now,
and I'm getting hungry for lunch, so "exhilerated" will have to do.

Enjoy!!

Pro photos for your youth athlete - any Eastlake Little League families out there? Mar 06th | filed in: News, What to wear

Do you remember the cool shots I created so that Mat's soccer team
could win their trip to the David Beckham Academy?

I've decided to donate shots like that to a lucky (and generous) Eastlake Little League family!

If you've got a player in Eastlake Little League down here in the south bay of San Diego,
you know that Opening Day is tomorrow! (Saturday, March 7th)

I've had a lot of interest in cool sports shots of youth athletes,
so I decided to donate a "YouthProShots" session to the ELL silent auction.

Each team had to donate a basket of goodies to the ELL silent auction,
so if you're there at Opening Day, look for the basket from a cute little T-ball team
that has a goodie in there from YOUTHPROSHOTS!

Pro photos for your youth athlete - any Eastlake Little League families out there?

The winner's team will get an action photo session where I'll take action shots of every player
with the uber-cool snazzy lighting.
I'll use those shots to make a SUPER COOL 3ft x 5ft team full-color team banner!

(We're not talking the air-brushed felt things, people! You know I wouldn't do that!)

I've already heard that lots of folks want to win this,
so my recommendation is to get together with fellow team parents and pool your money
so you can WIN this for your team!

Good luck!!

I'm still trying to recover from Vegas, and I'm all a-Twitter now, too! Feb 23rd | filed in: News

Getting past "you had to be there" syndrome is my #1 goal for this blog post!

WPPI was a blast, and if you're a photographer who wasn't there,
make plans for next year, because you missed out on a ton of fun and learning!

I landed in Vegas Sunday morning and met LISA at the airport.
We shared a cab to MGM, where we picked up BECCA for our brunch and Jill-e photoshoot.

Brunch at Bellagio was yummee as always, full of friendship and chit-chat,
but it was just a hint of the fun that was to be had over the course of WPPI.

After brunch, we went outside and started working on the Jill-e cover shoot.

Here are the beautiful Dana & Lisa in front of Bellagio:

Aren't they adorable?

Here are Lisa, Dana, and JILLIAN getting some silly shots that morning:

Sunday also ushered in the era of "The Hair."
No matter where I went, someone would comment on my hair.
It started in the airport with Lisa, and it didn't stop till I went to bed in San Diego
after getting home on Wednesday night (I'm not kidding).

I guess my hair must look like poopoo most of the time,
because for Vegas, I used my favorite ceramic flatiron to create some curl,
and I never stopped hearing about my hair.
My hair got more greetings than I did.

I had a choice to make:
#1: I could be flustered all week long because my hair was getting all of these comments.
#2: I could go back to my "I don't care" air-dried hair-do.
or
#3: I could embrace it, have fun with it, and take this as an opportunity to be a goofball.

I'm really good at being a total dork goofball, so I went with #3.
Brian (Mr. MeRa) said that my hair would have more friends than I ever could. He's probably right.
During this whole time, I was also debating getting started on Twitter (I've been holding out).
That's when I decided on my Twitter name: CareysHair
So, yes, I'm on Twitter now! I'm still figuring out the whole Twitter thing, but
feel free to follow CareysHair!

I used one of those "totally being a doofus" pictures on my Twitter page,
courtesy of Lisa:

Here's one more shot from Sunday with me, Dana, JILL, and Lisa:

See that cool camera strap of mine!?
I got my BLACK RAPID strap! This shoot was the first big test of that strap,
and I LOVE IT! I was afraid it would be too manly, but it's not!
I've used it at the beach for some sessions since then, too, and it's fabulous --
so much more comfortable than having a strap around my neck of my wrist!

After the Jill-e shoot, my camera went into the safe in my hotel room
and didn't come out until I left for the airport.
So, I don't have many pictures from the rest of the week,
but it sure was fun!

I was in the MPIX booth talking to folks every day,
and I got to meet up with some great friends, like JOE & JP and ladies from
last year's "Refuse to Say Cheese" workshop here in San Diego!

The tradeshows (there were TWO HUGE tradeshow rooms!) were amazing,
and full of great info, teaching, and new stuff for photographers!

I was also up late every night hanging out with friends and playing craps.
The MOST FUN was totally free, and I still laugh just thinking about it:
A group of us, including the mild-mannered mellow Shawn Reeder,
stayed up till the wee hours in the MGM food court putting on our own
Cheesy-80s-love-songs and showtunes Karaoke. It was HILARIOUS!
We rocked the house down with Air Supply, Journey, & Wicked songs!

Next year is bound to be a ton of fun & learning, plus I know there will be
some GREAT Platform Talks (wink wink), so set aside March 4-11, 2010 NOW!

ATTN Vegas-bound lovers of Jill-e bags! Make room in your schedule Sunday Feb 14th | filed in: News

Jill, president of Jill-e Designs, asked if I could create the cover for their next catalog
while we're in Vegas next week.

How can I NOT help create the cover for my favorite camera bag's catalog!?!

Jill hadn't decided exactly what she wanted for the catalog cover,
so we started going over ideas for the catalog, tossing ideas back and forth.
We ended up with something really fun, and you can be in on it!

Whenever I arrive in Vegas for WPPI, my tradition is to always go to the
Bellagio Brunch Buffet before I start my WPPI craziness.
I usually meet a few friends there, we have a fun time chit-chatting and relaxing,
and enjoying the yumee yumee food -- I get dessert first, just because I can!

This year, Jill is joining me for brunch, and you can join us, too!
After brunch, we're going to hit the strip around Bellagio & Paris,
and we'll have a fun time shooting the cover photo for the new
Jill-e 2009 Spring/Summer catalog!

Here's last year's:

Dana helped me shoot that in La Jolla last year -- she's awesome!

This year, we're going to hit the strip, and you can help shoot the Jill-e cover!
Bring your camera and a smile -- because if you want to help shoot the cover,
the only requirement is that you must be willing to step in FRONT of the camera
for your turn at modeling the bags!

If you don't have a Jill-e bag, that's fine! Jill's bringing the ones she wants on the cover.

After the shoot, you'll email your best shots to me (by Fri 2/20),
and I'll get them to the Jill-e catalog folks so they can choose the cover shot.
I'll be sure that the photographer & the model get credit!

We'll meet around 10am on Sunday, so if you want to join us, EMAIL ME at barefootmemories@gmail.com
and I'll get you all the details!
Just for our own sanity, we're going to limit the group to 8,
so email me quickly if you want to come!

Sorry, the brunch isn't included in this fun morning, but I'll do my best to get Jill
to bring some coupons or deals or fun stuff for us!

See you soon!

Heading back to Vegas! WPPI 2009 ... stop by Mpix and say hi! Feb 12th | filed in: News

There are only a few days and one photo session left until I leave for WPPI 2009!

Last year's WPPI convention was a TON of fun.
I did a Platform presentation, and that was a blast.

If you've never been to WPPI, here's what a "Platform talk" looks like:

There are some REALLY good Platform talks this year!
Photographers talk about all kinds of stuff -- photography, business, and some
crazy Platform presenters talk about how to make the best fart noises:

When I was planning for WPPI 2009, I had a bunch of phone calls with
Mpix & the WPPI folks. (Planning for this stuff happens WAY in advance,
so this all happened back in late Spring & early Summer last year.)
Based on the layout of the presentation rooms & classrooms & the expo space for WPPI '09,
we decided that I would work with Mpix and my other sponsors in the tradeshow expo.
My sponsors wanted to reach as big of an audience as they could,
so we decided that focusing on the expo would be the best way to go.
Fine by me! That Platform talk was fun, but it's refreshing not to have to plan one this year!
There will be even BIGGER STUFF happening for WPPI 2010!
It's amazing how far ahead this stuff is planned.

So, this year, I'll be talking to photographers in the Mpix booth at the tradeshow expo.
On Monday and Tuesday, I'll be there at 12:30pm.
On Wednesday, I'll be there at 1pm.
It would be great to see you, so come on by and say hi!

WPPI is going to be a super fun photo party!
I talked to Skip (BBQ Smackdown runner up & president of WPPI) earlier this week,
and he's stoked about how how many photographers from ALL OVER THE WORLD
are making their way to Vegas!
The executive team at the MGM Grand demanded a meeting with the WPPI execs
because they want to know how on Earth WPPI did what NO OTHER convention
has been able to do in the last few years:
The MGM hotel is TOTALLY SOLD OUT for the week of WPPI! That's just unheard of these days!

WPPI is going to be HUGE!
There's always so much to do and see, and so much fun to be had!
When I can carve out some free time, I'll be having some fun at the craps tables,
but not too much fun.
Any other craps-lovers like me out there? Drop me a line, and we can take over a table!
